Self practice: hold to speak / free talk / scenarios

Three common ways to practise on your own.

Self practice is for speaking on your own initiative, without waiting for a parent or teacher to assign a task.

Three modes

ModeGood forLess good for
Hold to speakShadowing, short sentences, pronunciationLong free conversations
Free talkSpeaking whenever you feel like itWhen you need a fixed script
ScenarioEveryday situations such as ordering food, small talk, travelWhen you only want to read aloud

How to start

  1. Open Practice → Self practice.
  2. Choose a mode; you can adjust practice preferences in settings.
  3. Allow the microphone and start.
  4. When done, review in Progress.

How this differs from tasks and pair practice

  • Speaking task: someone assigns it and there is a goal to finish. See Speaking tasks.
  • Live pair practice: two people talk and AI listens. See Live pair practice.

If…

  • You are not sure which to choose: Hold to speak for pronunciation on a commute; Free talk to practise reacting; Scenario when you have a clear situation (ordering food and so on).
  • No sound partway through: check the microphone and network. See Practice FAQ.
